`As a leader of the resistance that would liberate Vietnam from French colonialism and defeat US imperialism, Ho Chi Minh gave hope to oppressed and exploited people around the world.`
`At age 21, Ho Chi Minh left his country to become a revolutionary, traveling through Harlem, London and Paris and getting involved in the international socialist movement. In France he became a founding member of the French Communist Party. Later he lived in the Soviet Union and China where he studied and worked in different governmental institutions. He also served as a senior Comintern agent around Southeast Asia for years and eventually, in the late 1930s, went to China to serve as an advisor to the Communist armed forces.`
`After returning to Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh played a major role in uniting the left fractions and forging the party that would lead the liberation movement in the region. By the 1960s his name was chanted by protesters the world over, for whom he became a symbol of the Third World’s will and ability to stand up to American imperialism.`
`Though initially a Vietnamese nationalist who only wanted to get rid of colonialism in his homeland, he became convinced of the need for socialism after reading Lenin on imperialism, whose position was that no nation can be free if it oppresses other nations and explained for him the necessity of fighting all forms of oppression and exploitation, both that of the working class in colonizing countries as well as the masses in colonized countries. Ho Chi Minh became a staunch internationalist and thoroughly convinced that both struggles were intertwined.`
