(*2405d2f7*):: If I had to guess why mincraft is so slow is there are so many cubes. They look simple but there are probably tons of them on the screen
(*097dfbf6*):: if your scene is voxel based then you’ll want to have a voxel based renderer. If they are legit just using a shit ton of polys theyre fucking up
(*097dfbf6*):: there have been fast voxel renderers since the late 90s
(*097dfbf6*):: remember comanche?
(*097dfbf6*):: did you ever play this? It was so sick at the time https://youtu.be/MLcxgYEBAXA

(*2405d2f7*):: I kinda remember a game like that but not sure it is the same one as I’m thinking about.. but that is just a smooth mountain, it doesnt need textures .. i wonder if the vehicles are also voxel based
(*097dfbf6*):: computer graphics rendering algos are awesome

(*2405d2f7*):: the game where you fly around in tunnels was cool too.. we mentioned it here but I’m nto sure how fun it is and those games are far better with analog style joysticks
(*097dfbf6*):: descent?

(*097dfbf6*):: this was actually super fun with multiplayer

(*097dfbf6*):: I played that before quake, and I did 1v1 dialing up directly into friend’s modems lmao
(*2405d2f7*):: A voxel in minecraft would still need a texture for each side of the cubes even if they store the cubes like voxels
(*097dfbf6*):: they used quad tree based rendering for that
(*097dfbf6*):: instead of bsp like quake, an algo that came out shortly after
(*2405d2f7*):: oh yea? it is another game to consider as it’d definitely be fast on any machine.. but.. I dunno about flying with a mouse?
(*097dfbf6*):: its doable
(*2405d2f7*):: Yea, we really need a google doc to put all these notes into.. maybe publish it on a website so it looks like old school text rendering lol.
(*2405d2f7*):: Who would have known that GPUs are the basis of AI which is incredibly transformative to society and unlikely to be good for us overall…
